So today was a really interesting day.
First and foremost: I woke up feeling genuinely sick. Not nauseous but fever shivers, throat pain, coughing, joint pain.. whole shebang.. showered for 20 minutes or something just to gather morale... and immediately went from the shower to our heating fan because old habits die hard.
At 09:15 we headed to central Cascais to have breakfast at Honest Greens. I was surprised at how well my mood improved in here.. I just like the place. And it's even better when it isn't packed! I had their overnight oats special.. good stuff to start the day.
Shortly thereafter we went to the notary to get the purchase of the apartment officialized.. key handover and all. It all went quick. Lots of paperwork but it comes with the territory. And that's that!
26-27 months of HARD work from me and Margarida. Now we can finally start a life together and live as a couple in this beautiful apartment in an area we want to live in... I still haven't taken it all in so expect lots of updates in the weeks to come.
After that I got spoiled as Xana drove me to
#MaravilhasNordicas AGAIN as my snus package got delayed and I can't be down to my last snus not knowing if the package will arrive today or not.
Went home. Worked, had meetings. Then we went for lunch at A Petisqueira. I was initially pensive because Swedish remote office work stomache + sick... but I mean damn... with that company... and to celebrate the purchase of the apartment? It turned out fantastic. The porco preto was amazing with the spinach being extra good this time. Then we went by and picked up my actual snus package.. tiny detour at Junta de Freguesia for partner papers (for future residency papers..).. and yeah!
Went home. Ibuprofen. Work.
Nap.
Margarida left for work dinner.
I bought Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling on my old Nintendo Switch with the intent of doing little but playing it, walking and eating soup and nutritious foods until I heal up. Also need to unwind from work as I did craaazy hours week before last weekend AND the weekend AND all of this week... resting is important.
Oh, and I made this neat simple potato soup out of three huge potatoes. Just sliced and boiled them, removed some water while I slowcooked onion and garlic in a pan on the site.. blitzed the potatoes.. added onions.. blitzed some more.. rosemary, salt, pepper.. lovely.

As a matter of strategic urgency, we must realize that we need our own GitHub, our own YouTube, and our own Twitter. We should have introduced them 15 years ago, but it is better to be late than to never embrace it to begin with. Social media and digital platforms have fundamentally changed our behaviors, political discourse, and culture, much like Gutenbergs printing press.
As Marshall McLuhan wrote, technologies are extensions of man that reshape society. Alfred North Whitehead noted that civilization advances by increasing the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them. Today, many of these operations are outsourced to foreign digital monopolies. Git is a distributed version control system that allows developers to track and collaborate on code. GitHub is the largest platform for hosting and sharing Git repositories.
If Europeans were denied access to these repositories, innovation could slow and technological stagnation would threaten critical infrastructure. Tools like curl and protocols for secure communication depend on open-source contributions. Much of the internet, from cloud services to industrial systems, relies on these shared technologies. Microsoft and Apple have repeatedly violated user privacy, enforced proprietary lock-in, and weakened digital autonomy. Europe must stay friendly but also actively support logical, secure, and free alternatives.
Linux and the broader free software ecosystem provide privacy, control, and adaptability. Supporting these alternatives is essential for Europes security, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty. The European Commissions initiative to strengthen open-source ecosystems is urgent. By ensuring access, support, and scaling of free technologies, Europe can regain control over its digital infrastructure, protect citizens rights, and maintain long-term innovation without depending on external actors.

Completely normal behavior in #Portugal
The hills are alive
with the Sound of Music
With songs they have sung
For a thousand years
The hills fill my heart, God
with the Sound of Music
My heart it wants to sing
Every song it hears

Just booked a flight to Finland in 12 days.🇫🇮
Five hour flight from Portugal...
If it wasn't for this atrocious flu spell... I would be genuinely stoked... right now I'm still busy licking my wounds.
Oh well.. guess I'll get to rest in February when me and @dotmargui finally move in to our apartment.
* My partner woke me up at 09:40, "America has invaded Venezuela and taken out Maduro"
* sounds like 2026 to me
* Day..6..7 of being sick 😏
* weather kinda sucks
* I'm tired of being sick
* just going to play Zelda TOTK all day
So no drinking for me. Just ibuprofen, vitamins, good food, good company from people who also just recently had the flu...
Life could be so much worse.
Hopefully I'll be in Finland in ~20 days with my beloved Margarida... and then in February we have our own home!
Feliz Ano Novo
Gott Nytt År
Happy New Year everybody!
* Definitely still sick
* bought a COVID-test during Lunch today actually...aaaand nope! I don't have COVID... but @dotmargui told me they make tests for regular Influenza too these days so I might test for that tomorrow.
* I _think_ I am improving.. Day 1 and 2 where fever chills, intense joint pain/neck pain... headache, light and sound sensitivity... then now it's throat pain.. hurts to swallow.. coughing...
* oh and yeah, the whole family over here is dealing with it now.
* amusing myself with the Blade movies until I fall asleep

Keeping myself up with this album that I haven't spun in forever.

Vad är det då för mening om man står ut?
Visst har det blivit kaos i tidens lopp
Men så länge det finns ungar så finns det hopp
Still stressful moments but feedback is good and people can see my vision in terms of my plans, documentation, solutions.
It makes me proud of the work I do and it's all well worth the effort.
...on a less cool note I'm definitely sick still.. but I think I am improving.
A bit cold today..
But Margarida cooked me a #Swedish classic for lunch: #Pyttipanna!
And now I'm just unwinding my mind with a hefty #crossword magazine my parents gave me.
I'll spare the deets... just... less of the typical viral symptoms of the day before that but a horrible cramp I either gave myself from caffeine, too many Strepsils or too much Chouriço the day before. It was remarkably bad though... way more raw than I'd get from a more severe hangover even!
Oh well.. we did an addendum to the handover procedure and actually visited the new apartment today!
All things moved out. We have all keys. It's ours! Looks right now like the actual first night spent will have to be in early january when we have all furni in place... bed frame being the latest order... but yeah, I am stoked about 2026!
When we got home I made burgers.
Salt, freshly cracked black pepper, tiny sprinkle of chipotle and garlic that I lightly fried in the pan.. turned into smash patties. Served on a Bimbo gluten-free bun with cream cheese infused with butterfried mushrooms, Danish Sorte Sara Cheese, salad and delicious tomatoes!
Oh and I played some more Bug Fables... it's a cozy game!
To flex my Yin/Yang I'll say that even though I was sick all weekend it gave me a good excuse NOT to pick up work... and the pay-off was immense for mental clarity, mood... I'm ready to tackle tomorrow!
